FLOW :: The Un-Blocking Lab

Our girl Sam is joining forces with her friend and writer Rafaela for FLOW, a 2-hour workshop on striking the balance between strong and soft for a major creative, energetic and metaphorical unblocking.

With all that wide-open space for creative expression, Raf will help you dive into a 20-minute free-form writing session -- no rules, no confines, just writing. Make a little room for some magic, babies, and see what happens. Sign up, sign your friend up and bring a notebook and a pen! Click HERE to sign up.

VIBE :: The OM Lab

If you're that one kid who's vinyasa-obsessed with a boss flow but sits all silent and uncomfortable, enduring the OM at the end of the class because it seems as though you have to but you'd really rather not, hi, welcome! If you're the other kid who maybe doesn't super get what's going on with the OM but you've tried it a few times and hate to admit that you kinda like it, this one's for you! And if you're 100% all in on some body-shaking OMs and want to sing and vibrate and sound-heal and make noise, let's fucking do this.

Please join our very own Sam Wilensky and our dear friend cellist Dan Bindschedler for this 90-minute introduction to OM and its healing properties. In this workshop, we will practice, explore, and discuss a different style of meditation that occurs physically through vocal chords and vibrations to counteract stress on the body and mind. This workshop is suitable for all human beings and maybe your dog, too.

This workshop is a three-parter:

Part 1:
The history of OM, its function and place in our practice

Part 2:
Guided Meditation - An exploration of the OM chant and its vibrations led by Dan on cello

Part 3:
Closing Yin Yoga Practice - a 30-minute grounding class led by Sam, accompanied by live cello

An audio recording of cello drones will be available to all students sign up for the workshop

Trust the Teacher :: A Lab for Gurus

Be Shakti is back in action this February with Trust the Teacher :: A Lab for Gurus, wherein she wanted to do a workshop but didn't have the content planned out just yet and we decided that was kind of cool in and of itself. Teachers and teaching moments present themselves when we get quiet and allow, surrender, trust, whatever you want to call it - we have to shut up before we can listen, learn. Workshops often come from a place of ego - we want to nail the handstand, to find the hand balances, to untangle the things we don't understand; we want out of the dark and into that advanced practice. The true advanced practice comes not from mastery of shapes but from the ability to abandon our fear of the darkness, to relinquish attachments to end result and trust the unfolding. The advanced practitioner is the purest student, one who allows their mind to be blown on the daily, who learns something in every scenario and knows that what they need most may be something they never could have imagined on their own.

Be is my teacher; she has taught vinyasa, yin and ashtanga yoga for many years. She is a bhakti yogi and a storyteller, a runner and a ruthless adventurer. She has taken my limited joint mobility and short hip flexors and called me perfect, shown me and my practice places I never thought possible.

Trust the Teacher :: A Lab for Gurus comes to NLC on Saturday, Feb 16, from 2 - 4pm. $50 in advance or at the door. Click here to reserve in advance!

STRIPPED :: A Psychosomatics Lab

Be is joining us this spring for the ultimate body-as-laboratory workshop, an inquiry into the way the body physically holds and processes our contexts, traumas and memories. Psychosomatics is the science of mind-body interaction (sounds familiar, don't it?), the intricacies of the body as a shield and storehouse for our personal histories. Starting with the basest, most animalistic of physical triggers, the fight or flight response, we'll strip away the surface and see what we can start to unlock, seeing the body as both a tool and archaeological playground for discovery.

This workshop is included in the 200HRTT program, so if you're a TT participant, you're already signed up! We are opening a limited number of spaces to the public to join us for this session. Click here to sign up!

SLOW + DEEP :: The Yin Yoga Lab

We're psyched to welcome Be to our spring lab roster with SLOW + DEEP, her signature Yin yoga workshop.

As New Yorkers, we're notorious for walking fast, moving quickly and getting things done. In fact, we're experts. Often, the hardest thing for us to do is pause, notice the breath and BE with it, without needing to change or alter the present circumstance or outcome. It is when we slow down, though, that layers of our body armor soften and we are able to sink in to the depths of our true, authentic, real selves. In this YIN workshop, we will address the layers beneath the physical body by holding postures for an extended period of time to melt away tension and liberate the flow of qi that moves through the meridians of the subtle body.

YUP. Click here to sign up!
